Wednesday

Being formed by the word, works, and ways of Jesus is core to our mission at Calvary Chapel. One of the main pathways we provide for this formation is The Gathering on Wednesday nights.

For The Gathering, we host a variety of courses on our campus that target specific areas of life for deep discipleship. These courses meet in seasonal terms, several times a year, and include topics that touch on finances, prayer, marriage, emotional health, biblical studies, and more.

We strive to keep The Gathering accessible for our whole church community, so Kids Church is provided along with Junior High and High School ministries. Please see below for more information on The Gathering and how you can get involved.

Upcoming Courses

  • Using Proverbs, we will explore God’s wisdom for everyday life, learning how the fear of the Lord shapes our character, decisions, relationships, and worship. This class is designed to move slowly, creating space for thoughtful engagement rather than hurried reading.

A primary goal is to provide a safe and loving environment where you can ask questions that you may not normally feel comfortable asking. Student involvement is key: questions can be answered by anyone, no matter maturity, position, or time following Jesus so we can hear how God ministers to each person through the Scriptures, giving space for all to contribute while staying focused on the content.

We will read and meditate on selected passages to grow in our comprehension of how they apply to our lives. Through discussion, guided questions, and reflection, we will seek to walk in wisdom, cultivate discernment, and grow in living faithfully in the fear of the Lord.

  • This course will cover the meaning of biblical stewardship, which involves more than money. All areas of our lives should be submitted to the Lordship of Jesus. Participants will be challenged in discussions of all the gifts and resources that God has blessed us with. Students can expect to draw closer to Jesus, develop high-trust relationships, and be given practical guidelines and tools in order and achieve lives of meaning and purpose in God’s economy.

Our class will use a manual (Do Well) that provides homework, memorization of Scripture, and practical application (about 30 minutes per day) as well as The Worst Financial Mistakes in the Bible and a “Finish Well” map. Homework is assigned one week prior to in-class discussion. Please pick up class materials at the Kiosk at least one week before our first class; read Chapter 1 in the Do Well manual.

  • This course builds on the foundation of former Church History courses by tracing the story of the Church during the Great Awakening. Together, we will follow the key movements, controversies, and transformations that shaped the Church during the 18th and 19th centuries, paying special attention to influential leaders and pivotal moments. The aim of this class is not only to understand how the Church developed during these years, but also to reflect on the enduring lessons this history offers for the life and mission of the Church today.

  • The very first words of the Bible state: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” This proclamation will guide our class as we explore the connection between Art and Church History. The act of creation—used to express ideas, beliefs, and passions—has shaped the human experience throughout time.

Because the arts are woven into Church History, you will learn to interpret and understand history through various art forms while gaining skills to analyze artworks. Each period will include study of architecture, sculpture, paintings, key church leaders, influential artists, and the political structures that shaped both the Church and the arts. By the end of the course, you will have a deeper knowledge of Church History, stronger skills in art analysis, and a richer relationship with our Creator.

  • This course provides a welcoming space for new believers, seekers, and those making a fresh commitment to Christ who desire to take the next step in their journey with God. Together, we will explore what it means to encounter and receive the transforming love of God as the foundation of the Christian life. Drawing loosely from Surrender to Love by David Benner, the class will guide participants in practices of openness, surrender, and trust, helping them to both experience and respond to God’s love in deeper ways. Because this foundation is one we return to again and again, the course is designed to be accessible whether you are beginning your faith journey or seeking to renew and strengthen it.

  • This Gathering class is centered on Paul Tripp’s series, Habits of a Healthy Marriage. Together, we’ll explore the habits and disciplines that nurture a Christlike, grace-filled relationship. Each session will include video teaching, guided discussions, and Scripture-based resources designed to help you put truth into practice. Whether you are married, engaged, or single, this class offers practical wisdom and spiritual encouragement for building relationships that reflect God’s love.

  • We live in a time and culture of constant movement. So where and how does mission fit in?

In this course and during our times together, we will try to slow down so we can take notice.

We will look at God’s mission in the midst of our stories, our varied multicultural lenses, our places of influence, and the current times.

In considering these things, we remind ourselves of the invitation to follow him, in the ordinary and extraordinary—to be a community of bridge builders, to live our lives reflecting a better kingdom, and to share his very good news with those we are among.

  • Growing up, I can’t recall really being shown how to pray. If you can relate, please plan to join us for Praying 101! We'll walk through why praying is so important, look at examples and guidelines for praying that are found in the Bible, and give plenty of opportunity for our honesty to meet God’s holiness.

This is intended to be a “living lab,” where we will grow, together! Consider joining us this fall for a highly interactive, discussion-oriented class to be inspired to pray more!

  • All believers share a common calling to follow in the way of Jesus and become more like him. In the Spiritual Formation class, we will explore our identity in Christ (Be with Jesus) and how that flows into a pattern of practices (Become like Jesus) that help us walk more and more in step with our Savior (Do what Jesus did).

FAQs

Can I come when class sessions have already started?

Yes! We would love for you to join any time and will always have at least one open course. Please note that some courses will not be available to join once they are underway.

The course I am interested in is full. What can I do?

Unfortunately, we must limit the number of people in each course to best fit the shared content and the classroom size. You can check in with our team at the Kiosk for a waitlist option or register for one of our other courses.

Is there worship?

We have dedicated specific nights and gatherings to a time of worship as a church community, but we do not have a time of corporate worship before or after your class time at The Gathering. However, we encourage you to spend time in the Courtyard before and after class for snacks, coffee, and time together.

Can I bring a guest?

Absolutely! Please let your teacher know in advance if possible so they can prepare to welcome them. If they decide to register for the course, they can visit the Kiosk on Wednesday for help.

What happens during course breaks?

We have at least three, eight-week sessions a year, with seasonal breaks for events, development of new courses, a time of refreshment for our teachers, and space for our church family to enjoy their evenings with family and friends. Should there be any planned events or sessions during a break, you will be able to find those details on our church calendar.

Is the cost to attend a course?

Our courses have no cost. There are some courses with a curriculum fee each season. These fees are noted upon registration, and workbooks will be available for purchase from our Kiosk.

Is there live stream or archives available?

As of now, there is no live stream or recordings of any of our classes. If you miss a week, join us again when you are able and talk with your teacher about material you might want.

Do I need to be enrolled in a course to bring my kids?

Yes, our Kids Church team welcomes your 0 to 5th-grade children into their classrooms, so you are able to participate in a course of your own.

How can I switch courses?

If you’d like to move to another course, please let our team know at the Kiosk, and we’ll help make the arrangements for you.
